It's the deal that has everyone talking - Florian Wirtz, the Bayer-Star, has signed on the dotted line with none other than FC Liverpool! This transfer, valued at a staggering sum in both Germany and England, is about to rewrite the book on football transactions.

Bayer Leverkusen and FC Liverpool have officially agreed to terms for the 22-year-old's transfer. Wirtz is now headed to the English Premier League, officially becoming part of the Liverpool family. Following successful medical checks, Wirtz expressed his excitement on the club's official website, "I'm beyond thrilled. This has been a long-time dream of mine, and I can't wait to start this new adventure." Wirtz recalled conversations with former players who had made the leap, highlighting the Premier League's allure.

Bayern's Disappointment

For a while, FC Bayern was in hot pursuit of Wirtz, but Liverpool's US-based Fenway Sports Group seemed to have the upper hand in negotiations. Reports suggest that Wirtz could potentially earn around €20 million annually, a significant salary increase from his previous earning at Bayer Leverkusen.

Despite Bayern's strong interest, long-time patron Uli Hoeneß was left stunned when the battle for Germany's premier talent culminated in defeat at the end of May.

Wirtz's transfer breaks three records: he is now the most expensive German footballer, surpassing Kai Havertz; holds the record for the most expensive transfer in Bundesliga history, surpassing Ousmane Dembélé's €135 million move to FC Barcelona; and is the most expensive transfer ever made by a Premier League club, surpassing Enzo Fernández's €121 million transfer to Chelsea in 2023.

Welcome to a Stacked Attack

Wirtz is poised to make an immediate impact at Liverpool, joining a formidable offensive force led by the likes of Mo Salah, Alexis Mac Allister, and Cody Gakpo. Under the guidance of new manager Arne Slot, Wirtz will reportedly be paired with Dutch speedster Jeremie Frimpong, who will also be joining the Reds for the upcoming season.

The Crumbling Pillars of Leverkusen

With Wirtz's departure, key players from Leverkusen's recent success story are starting to leave. Coach Xabi Alonso is on his way to Real Madrid, and defensive linchpin Jonathan Tah is headed to Bayern Munich. In addition, Wirtz and Frimpong are off to Liverpool, while rumors swirl around captain Granit Xhaka and left-back Alejandro Grimaldo. Barcelona has been mentioned as a potential destination, but the club continues to struggle with financial issues.

Born in Pulheim near Cologne, Wirtz joined Leverkusen from Cologne in January 2020 at the age of 16. He made his Bundesliga debut at 17 and scored his first goal against Bayern Munich just weeks later. Wirtz made his German national team debut in September 2021 and quickly rose to prominence as a world-class player at Leverkusen, winning the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal in the 2023/24 season without a single loss, save for the Europa League final against Atalanta Bergamo. Wirtz played 140 Bundesliga games for Leverkusen, scoring 35 goals. He has played 31 times for the German national team, scoring seven goals. Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann expressed his support for the move, calling it "a good step" and noting that Wirtz would thrive in the new environment and the superb Liverpool team.
