Breaking News: Exploration of Nationwide Developments
A tragic incident unfolded on August 8, 2025, near the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. The shooter, identified as 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White, opened fire on the CDC’s Atlanta headquarters, resulting in the death of DeKalb County police Officer David Rose and White himself.
The attack occurred around the bustling Clifton Road, where all three institutions line up, with law enforcement vehicles parking throughout the streets and a warning siren repeatedly sounding near the Emory and CDC campuses.
White, who was armed with a long gun and three other firearms, fired hundreds of rounds, striking at least four buildings on the CDC campus and causing widespread damage. He was reportedly wearing what looked like a surgical mask. Authorities recovered approximately 500 shell casings, approximately 200 of which struck CDC buildings.
The motive behind the attack is believed to be linked to White’s belief that the COVID-19 vaccine had harmed him physically and mentally. Neighbors and family members indicated he was deeply mistrustful of vaccines and often spoke about vaccine-related harm, contributing to his actions.
The incident prompted lockdowns at the CDC and Emory University, and investigations continue into White's medical history and mental health background. The shooting is considered an attack on public health, and CDC Director Susan Monarez explicitly linked misinformation to the deadly consequences of this event.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens stated that the motive of the shooter is not known as the investigation is in its preliminary stages. No civilians are believed to have been injured. Gov. Brian Kemp praised the efforts of first responders.
The shooter was found dead from a gunshot wound in a nearby CVS building, but it remains unclear if his death was self-inflicted or caused by law enforcement. The officer who died received gunfire during the shooting.
Emory University announced that people should avoid the area after the lifting of the shelter-in-place order. Brandy Giraldo, the chief operating officer of The General Muir restaurant, reported hearing what sounded like a string of gunshots.
Public health officials and the CDC's employee union view the attack as a violent act fueled by misinformation and anti-vaccine disinformation, which they warn poses ongoing threats to public safety and scientific communities.
The shooting is a somber reminder of the dangers that misinformation can pose. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Officer David Rose, as well as the entire campus community. The investigation into this tragic incident continues.
