Breaking news: Dabaw has been flooded

Davao City, often hailed as the "Crown Jewel of Mindanao," is currently grappling with a crisis that threatens to wash away its shine. For many years, the city has been plagued by a recurring flood problem, a situation that has only worsened in recent years due to the intensified rains and extreme weather brought about by climate change.

Resident of Mintal, Rein Perfecto, has penned an opinion piece highlighting the urgency of the flood issue in Mintal and other parts of Davao City. Perfecto, a long-time reader of the Davao website, expresses the anxiety felt by Mintal residents due to the constant threat of floodwaters.

The flood situation in Davao City was particularly evident on September 13, 2020, when heavy rainfall exacerbated the problem. Yet, instead of solutions, the recent flood-control situation resulted in excuses and partisan bickering.

Perfecto urges city officials and fellow citizens to recognise the urgency of the flood issue and take decisive action. The city deserves answers, not excuses, and action, not hashtags.

Last year, the local government of Davao City presented a feasible and long-term flood control plan for the city. However, the local government units, including barangay officials, have yet to provide long-term and concrete solutions to the flood problem.

The more people silence those who speak out about the flood problem, the deeper Davao sinks into the crisis. Dabawenyos must demand accountability from their leaders and stop tolerating blind fanaticism that shields incompetence.

Exposing the problem of flooding in Davao is not destroying Davao's image. On the contrary, it is a call to action, a plea for the city to rise above its complacency and address the realities of decay and neglect.

Some Dabawenyos attack those who post photos and videos of the flooding on social media. This issue is not about politics, but about survival, accountability, and the future of Davao City. If basic services like flood control cannot be held accountable, the future of Davao City is at risk.

Perfecto hopes to reach city officials and fellow citizens with their opinion piece, urging them to recognise the urgency of the flood issue and take decisive action. Davao must rise, but only if its people demand that their leaders stop wading in denial and start building real solutions.
