Today, Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025, marks the birthdays of several notable individuals and commemorates significant historical events.

In the world of entertainment, actor Edward Furlong (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) turns 48, while actor Sam Worthington (Avatar) and Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds) both celebrate their 49th and 61st birthdays respectively. Rock music producer Butch Vig, known for his work with Nirvana, turns 70, and actors Butch Patrick (The Munsters) and Actor Lily Gladstone are 72 and 39 respectively. Filmmaker Kevin Smith also celebrates his 55th birthday today.

Music lovers may remember that in 1873, Andrew S. Hallidie successfully tested a cable car he had designed for the city of San Francisco, revolutionising urban transportation. Fast forward to 1990, and the world witnessed a different kind of upheaval when Iraq invaded Kuwait, seizing control of the oil-rich emirate.

In sports, Olympic swimming gold medalist Simone Manuel turns 29 today. On August 2, 1876, frontiersman "Wild Bill" Hickok was shot and killed while playing poker at a saloon in Deadwood, Dakota Territory, by Jack McCall.

Historical milestones include the first United States Census in 1790, which was supervised by Thomas Jefferson and counted a total of 3,929,214 people, including nearly 700,000 enslaved individuals. In 1923, Warren G. Harding, the 29th president of the United States, died in San Francisco, and Vice President Calvin Coolidge became president. In 1945, President Harry S. Truman, Soviet leader Josef Stalin, and Britain's new prime minister, Clement Attlee, concluded the Potsdam conference.

The Black Sox scandal, one of the most infamous moments in baseball history, also took place on August 2. In 1921, a jury in Chicago acquitted nine individuals in the scandal, but they were later banned from Major League Baseball for life by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. The scandal involved eight Chicago White Sox players, including Shoeless Joe Jackson and Eddie Cicotte, who were accused of conspiring to fix the 1919 World Series. Despite the acquittal, the ban was unprecedented in baseball history, emphasising the league's stance on gambling and integrity.

Despite the historical milestones and commemorations, today's weather forecast predicts a stormy day, casting a shadow on the celebrations. As Olympic swimming gold medalist Simone Manuel commemorates her 29th birthday, her legacy in sports resonates with the infamous Black Sox scandal of 1921, which also occurred on this day, tarnishing the reputation of baseball.
