In a recent court ruling, Nelson Ribeiro Fonseca Junior, a man who stole a Neymar-signed soccer ball during the 2023 Brasília riots, has been convicted and sentenced to 17 years in jail. The ball, which was on display in Congress, was a public good belonging to the public heritage of Brazil.

The riots, which took place on January 8, 2023, saw thousands of supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro storm the Congress, the presidential palace, and the Supreme Court, causing extensive damage for hours. Ribeiro confessed to taking the ball during the unrest but claimed he took it to protect it and later returned it to the police.

While Bolsonaro is accused of instigating the riots, he was in the United States at the time of the attack. The former army captain and president from 2019 to 2022 is currently on trial for allegedly plotting to overthrow Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s government following his election victory. Prosecutors claim the plot failed due to lack of military support, but Bolsonaro denies any involvement.

During the unrest, Ribeiro found the ball on the floor in Congress and, according to his lawyers, wanted to protect it. He handed it over to the police 20 days later. The lawyers also argued that Ribeiro was not a key player in the riots and was merely caught up in the chaos.

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled that Ribeiro actively participated in the events leading to the storming of the Congress in Brasília, the presidential palace, and the Supreme Court. The judge emphasized that the ball was a symbol of the democratic values that were under attack during the riots.

This conviction marks a significant development in the aftermath of the 2023 Brazil coup attempt, with Ribeiro becoming the latest of more than 500 people to be convicted in connection with the incidents so far. The trial of Bolsonaro continues, with the former president denying any involvement in the riots and the alleged plot to overthrow the government.
