Brazilean Supreme Court initiates Bolsonaro's trial on September 2nd
The Supreme Federal Court of Brazil (STF) has set September 2nd, 2025, as the start date for the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is accused of leading a coup attempt to undermine Brazil’s electronic voting system and remain in power after his narrow 2022 electoral defeat.
This criminal case involves Bolsonaro and eight other defendants, including former Navy commander Almir Garnier, former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) Alexandre Ramagem, and Colonel Mauro Cid, former personal advisor to Bolsonaro when he was President of the Republic. Four former ministers of his government (2018-2022) are also among the defendants.
The trial will be conducted by a five-justice panel of the Supreme Court’s first panel, including the rapporteur Justice Alexandre de Moraes, and will be fully broadcast by the court’s media channels. The verdict and sentencing are expected to be delivered within the same period, from September 2nd to September 12th, 2025.
The prosecution alleges that Bolsonaro led a criminal organization involved in plans to overturn the election results, including violent actions targeting government institutions and officials. However, the defense argues that there is an absolute lack of evidence and denies Bolsonaro's participation in a coup plan. The former president's lawyers have asked the court to acquit Bolsonaro.
The trial has triggered a diplomatic and commercial conflict between Brazil and the United States. Former US President Donald Trump, who has been vocal in his support for Bolsonaro, imposed 50% tariffs on Brazilian products in retaliation against the trial he considers "unjust" and the product of a "political persecution." Trump reiterated his conviction that "what they're trying to do to Bolsonaro is political execution."
Despite the accusations, Bolsonaro denies all wrongdoing and claims the trial is a political “witch hunt.” Trump described what is happening to Bolsonaro as "terrible." The trial will determine whether Bolsonaro will be convicted for an alleged coup attempt to remain in power after losing the 2022 presidential elections.
