Violent Clashes Erupt Between Chelsea and Real Betis Fans in Wroclaw Ahead of Conference League Final

Police in Wroclaw, Poland, were forced to intervene as supporters of Chelsea and Real Betis engaged in street brawls, leaving footage of chaotic scenes where chairs and other objects were thrown.

The confrontation took place in and around the Kombinat pub and the Guinness pub located in Solny Square, as both sets of fans threatened each other with punches, kicks, and missiles.

In one video, Betis fans can be seen hurriedly moving away from the escalating violence while objects continued to fly. Another clip shows Polish riot police, clad in protective gear, attempting to restrain the opposing factions, ultimately resorting to tear gas to maintain order.

According to a statement from the Provincial Police Headquarters in Wroclaw, the situation has Since subsided, with no further reported incidents of violence or negative behavior after the arrival of police. However, the police are currently conducting investigations to identify those involved in the initial disturbance.

“The significant presence of police officers and their distribution in areas where residents and sports fans gather or move around ensures the safety of everyone,” read part of the statement.

Firefighters and rescuers are also on standby in the vicinity of the stadium and fan zones, aiming to respond swiftly should any unexpected incidents occur.

The latest episodes of violence in Wroclaw precede Wednesday's Conference League final between the two teams, which listeners can tune in to on talkSPORT.

Earlier this week, local publication Gazeta Wroclawska warned residents to anticipate a large influx of fans for the match, with up to 70,000 spectators expected to descend on the city. The western part of the city was anticipated to be the most affected due to several road closures enacted. Residents were also advised to avoid driving and instead use public transport to navigate the city due to increased traffic measures imposed to manage the surge of visitors.

The unsavory incidents in Wroclaw follow similar incidents in Paris during Arsenal's Champions League semi-final against Paris-Saint Germain last month. Despite an extensive security presence and around 2,000 police officers on duty, incidents ensued, including riot police intervening before the match and outside the stadium after a goal was scored. Arsenal had previously cautioned their fans to be vigilant in Paris, advising them to steer clear of certain areas known to be frequented by opposing fans.
