Braving Through Downpour?

In the event of a sudden storm with no shelter available while out on a bike ride, hike, or walk in nature, it's crucial to follow some essential safety guidelines to protect yourself from the dangers of lightning strikes.

The German Red Cross (DRK) advises that being the highest point during a storm can increase your risk of being struck by lightning. To minimise this risk, it's best to avoid being the tallest object in your surroundings.

Moreover, metal conducts electricity particularly well, so the DRK recommends keeping your bike at a safe distance during a storm. Touching other people during a lightning strike can also be problematic, and the current may flow between you, so it's advisable to maintain a distance of at least one meter from others.

If you find yourself caught outdoors during a storm, the DRK advises crouching down in a low-lying area. Keeping your feet close together, ideally only the balls of your feet touching the ground, can help to prevent the current from flowing through your entire body.

However, seeking protection from the rain by crouching under an umbrella can be dangerous. If lightning strikes, the current will go through the umbrella into your hand and through you, causing severe injuries. The DRK also advises against leaning against buildings or trees during a storm, as these structures can conduct electricity.

Throwing away umbrellas and walking sticks during a storm is also essential to avoid any potential risks.

It's worth noting that Bernd Böttiger, the federal physician of the German Red Cross and an emergency medicine specialist, advocates for the widespread introduction of first aid and resuscitation training in German schools to save lives in emergencies such as sudden cardiac arrest or lightning strikes.

While the desire to wait out a storm in a tight embrace with a partner or friend can be understandable on a psychological level, the risks involved make it advisable to maintain a safe distance from others during a lightning storm.

In summary, staying safe during a storm involves maintaining a low profile, keeping a safe distance from others, and avoiding metal objects, umbrellas, and any tall structures. By following these guidelines, you can help to protect yourself from the dangers of lightning strikes and increase your chances of staying safe during a storm.
