Brandon McNilty finds himself on the verge of contesting for overall victory at the Tour de Pologne, despite a close call in the summit finish.
Brandon McNulty Claims Victory in Tour de Pologne Time Trial
Brandon McNulty, the talented rider from Arizona, has added another feather to his cap by winning the individual time trial at the Tour de Pologne. The 12.5-kilometer hilly course around the Wieliczka salt mine proved no challenge for McNulty, who covered the distance in 14:31, securing his overall victory in the race.
McNulty's victory comes as no surprise, given his consistent track record in individual time trials (TT). He has previously won the US Pro National TT Championship and the Junior Men's World Time Trial Championship. Last year, he clinched the opening TT in the Vuelta a España in Lisbon, over a distance similar to the Tour de Pologne's final TT.
The rolling terrain and moderate climbs of the Tour de Pologne course did not deter McNulty. He has shown his ability to perform on such courses, having won time trials in WorldTour races like the UAE Tour and the Tour de Romandie.
In the Tour de Pologne, McNulty was one of the top pre-race favorites and is now in pole position for the final 12.5-kilometer individual time trial. His goal for the time trial is to distance his overall rivals, and with a seven-second deficit to race leader Victor Langellotti and a 13-second lead over the closest pre-race favorite, Antonio Tiberi, he is well-positioned to potentially win the overall victory in the Tour de Pologne and make cycling history.
McNulty's performance had both pros and cons. He picked up three valuable seconds in an intermediate sprint ahead of Tiberi and Jan Christen, but he also gained valuable seconds on the rest of the field during the closing 600 meters of the race.
UAE Team Emirates-XRG's plan for the race was for McNulty, Jan Christen, and Rafal Majka to all go for seconds to gain an advantage over their competitors. McNulty, however, plans to approach the time trial like any other, aiming to do his best and hoping for a good result. Before the time trial, he will check the course details on Veloviewer to familiarise himself with the terrain.
As second-placed rider on GC, McNulty will have time gaps on all his rivals bar race leader Victor Langellotti. This puts him in a strong position to potentially claim the overall victory in the Tour de Pologne.
