Brandon Hyde, manager of the Orioles, candidly discusses Kyle Gibson's dismal performance against the Yankees.
Baltimore Blues: O's Get Handed a Rough Loss by Yankees
The Baltimore Orioles suffered a humiliating defeat to the New York Yankees on Tuesday night, losing 15-3 - and it wasn't pretty. The O's current record now stands at an underwhelming 11-18, with a heap of questions swirling around the team.
Longtime player Kyle Gibson took the mound for the Orioles, but it seemed like he'd rather have been playing another game entirely. The Yankees lit up the scoreboard right off the bat with a string of three consecutive home runs, snatching a 5-run lead in the first inning alone.
Clearly struggling, Gibson lasted just 3.2 innings, conceding nine runs on 11 hits. His sluggish outing earned him his first loss of the season. After the match, manager Brandon Hyde was blunt about Gibson's performance, as reported by ESPN.
"He gave up four homers in the first inning. That's kind of a telling sign," Hyde commented. "At that point, I'm just trying to figure out how we're going to get through the game."
Gibson's Unwelcome Yankee Homecoming:
Kyle Gibson, who had recently signed a contract toward the end of March, marked his return to the Majors with a forgettable performance. For the 37-year-old veteran, who has previously played for the Minnesota Twins, St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers, and Philadelphia Phillies, this wasn't the homecoming he'd hoped for.
Gibson, who pitched for the Orioles in 2023, tallied a 15-9 record with a 4.73 ERA before moving to St. Louis in 2024. Reflecting on the night, he admitted there were issues with his pitching location and resolved to analyze the game footage in search of improvements for his next start.
"Just a weird instance where some of them were bad location, some of them weren't," Gibson admitted. "Physically, felt good, so that's kind of the frustrating thing...Not how I wanted the first one to go. Great night, lots of fans out there."
A Night to Remember for the Yankees:
Tuesday's outing was not just a tough night for Gibson but an exceptional one for the Yankees. The team notched another home run barrage, with this game being particularly noteworthy—they had three consecutive home runs to start the game and four total in the first inning.
Although Gibson's performance was uncharacteristic, he will analyze the game footage to identify areas for improvement before his next start.
As for the Orioles, they will face the Yankees once more on April 30, with Cade Povich taking the mound against Carlos Carrasco. Hopefully, the O's can turn things around before then.
- "Kyle Gibson's return to the Majors, after re-signing with the Orioles, was far from the homecoming he anticipated, resulting in an uncharacteristic performance."
- "The first inning of the game against the Yankees saw an uncharacteristic sluggish outing from longtime pitcher Kyle Gibson, as he conceded nine runs on 11 hits, including four homers."
- "Despite this forgettable performance, Gibson, a veteran who has previously played for several MLB teams, plans to analyze game footage to identify improvements for his next start."
- "Tuesday's loss to the Yankees was a rough one for the Orioles, with Gibson's performance only adding to the heap of unanswered questions swirling around the team in the sports realm of baseball."
