Rathäuser stormed - Carnival in Brandenburg begins - Brandenburg’s Carnival Season Begins with Joy, Debates, and Cultural Pride
The carnival season in Brandenburg has kicked off with celebrations in Babelsberg and Cottbus. Around 150 people gathered in Babelsberg due to Potsdam's City Hall renovations, while Mayor Noosha Aubel handed over symbolic keys to City Hall to carnival revelers. In Cottbus, Mayor Tobias Schick did the same despite intermittent rain.
Carnival communities are discussing important topics this season, including cultural appropriation, inclusion, and respectful participation. Fred Witschel, president of the Berlin-Brandenburg Carnival Association, sees carnival as creating moments of joy and lightness. He commented on its significance in the current season.
Carnival clubs such as Lindenpark Carnival Club, Potsdam Carnival Club, and Narrenschiff participated in Babelsberg's celebrations. Eastern German carnival traditions have been submitted for recognition as intangible cultural heritage, representing regional distinctiveness, integration, and sustainability with both tradition and modernity.
