The Brandenburg state chapter of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has been officially classified by Brandenburg's domestic intelligence agency as a "proven right-wing extremist" organization that violates human dignity and the state's constitution.

The intelligence agency's report, spanning 140 pages, documents the branch's anti-constitutional activities. These activities include advocacy for discriminatory ethnocultural nationalism, the use of xenophobic and racist rhetoric, and attempts to undermine democratic institutions and constitutional order.

The memo from the state's domestic intelligence agency states that the AfD Brandenburg promotes exclusion and discrimination against immigrants, Muslims, and those not considered part of the "German mainstream." Party officials have made statements that challenge the legitimacy of constitutional procedures and stoke social tensions with apocalyptic scenarios regarding migration. Since 2020, the branch has maintained and intensified contacts with other right-wing extremist organizations.

This state-level classification follows earlier designations of AfD branches in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia as right-wing extremist by intelligence agencies. On the federal level, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) declared the entire AfD party a confirmed right-wing extremist entity in May 2025, labeling it a racist and anti-Muslim organization.

The implications of the Brandenburg classification are significant. It enables more effective intelligence operations and surveillance against the AfD Brandenburg to counter its extremist activities. It also provides a legal basis for the government to pursue further consequences, including possible party bans, although such steps are considered to be longer-term.

The classification influences public and political debate, with a May 2025 poll showing 48% of Germans supporting a ban on the AfD and 61% viewing it as right-wing extremist. Several federal states have begun restricting AfD members from holding civil service, police, teaching, and military positions due to the threat posed by their extremist views.

The AfD responded with accusations of political persecution and discrediting efforts, framing the classification as politically motivated and an attack on free speech. However, Interior Minister René Wilke noted that a ban procedure is still far away but emphasized that if the AfD continues to radicalize, it is heading for a ban procedure.

The AfD initially prevented the publication of the domestic intelligence report on their Brandenburg state chapter with an urgent application to the Administrative Court in Potsdam. After withdrawing their application, the note could be published, and the party could now be officially classified as securely right-wing extremist. The domestic intelligence agency's classification of the AfD as securely right-wing extremist was based on their violation of human dignity, as shown in their stance on remigration.

Not all AfD members in Brandenburg can now be considered right-wing extremists, according to Minister Wilke. He also noted that a following that supports the AfD like a kind of football club, regardless of their performance, has been observed. This group moves in a kind of cultural community room.

The classification allows for the use of intelligence methods more effectively and easily. The memo from the state's domestic intelligence agency shows that the AfD Brandenburg state chapter is striving to abolish fundamental loyalty to the constitution by violating human dignity.

  1. The branding of the AfD Brandenburg as a "proven right-wing extremist" organization by the state's domestic intelligence agency is not only reflected in policy-and-legislation but also extends to general news, crime-and-justice, and politics, as the group is known for violating human dignity, advocating discriminatory ethnocultural nationalism, and undermining democratic institutions.
  2. Vocational training becomes crucial in this context, as the classification of the AfD Brandenburg as a right-wing extremist entity makes it essential to provide vocational training to counter their extremist activities, ensuring that individuals are not drawn into their ideology and are equipped with the knowledge to uphold democratic values and constitutional order.
