Brace for Strong Wind Blasts: Alert Delivered
Wind Warning Issued for Western Iceland
Strong southeasterly winds are expected to hit Western Iceland later today, with gales of 13-18 m/s and gusts locally exceeding 30 m/s. The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) has issued yellow weather warnings for Faxafloí and Breiðafjörður, in addition to earlier warnings for Hafnarfjall and Snæfellsnes.
The warning for Hafnarfjall and Kjalarnes specifically includes potential for extremely strong wind gusts. The warning for Breiðafjoerður takes effect at 5 p.m. and lasts until 10 p.m., while the warning for Faxafloí takes effect at 6 p.m. and lasts until 10 p.m.
The IMO expects these conditions to be associated with a deepening low-pressure system approaching from the Greenland Sea, causing increasing southeasterly winds, thickening cloud cover, and rain in southern and western Iceland later in the day.
A small ridge of high pressure over Iceland is moving eastward, allowing the low-pressure system to dominate the weather conditions in the west and southwest. This will result in increasing southeasterly winds, thickening cloud cover, and moderate to strong winds in Iceland, with rain expected in the southern and western regions later in the day.
The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration advises drivers to exercise caution on the roads in these areas, particularly near mountains where very sharp wind gusts are expected. A yellow weather warning has been issued for strong wind gusts beneath Hafnarfjall and in localized areas in the northern part of Snæfellsnes between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. this evening.
In contrast, northern and eastern Iceland can expect bright and pleasant weather for most of the day. The IMO's warnings do not apply to these regions.
