Volleyball thrills once again as BR Volleys and SVG Lüneburg face off in cup semis
The combo of volleyball and drama between the BR Volleys and SVG Lüneburg never disappoints! In their third consecutive cup semi-final clash – this time at Max-Schmeling-Halle – it was a 3:2 win for the German champs, thanks to a rollercoaster affair that demanded every ounce of their skill and grit.
The defending champs from Berlin faced their Lüneburg rivals in the frantic, edge-of-your-seat drama on Wednesday, where the tie-break decided the outcome for the third year in a row. "It was wild with loads of highs and lows," exclaimed Cap'n Schott (Volleys skipper) afterwards. Lüneburg's coach, Hübner, echoed this, describing it as a "weird game."
The climactic final will take place in Mannheim on March 3, with an estimated 10,000 spectators in attendance. Middle blocker Timo Tammemaa from Berlin humbly admitted: "I'm stoked for this moment."
Since 2018, the BR Volleys have been tested by Lüneburg in cup competition, with each match going to the brink. In their initial skirmish in Hamburg, the Volleys ended up on the losing side after leading 2:0 in sets. Luckily for them, the 2022/23 quarter-finals staged a stirring triumph at home with the tie-break only ending 27:25 on the twelfth match point.
The Thursday fight was another pulsating ride for both crews. Despite dominating in the initial and final sets, Lüneburg had a field day in the second and fourth rounds. The Berliners turned it around in the tie-break, as Schott confirmed: "We were far more consistent again." Superstar attacker Marek Sotola sealed the deal with 30 points, assuring that, "We never gave up and kept the battle going!"
