Boxing: Signing Agreement Between Moreu Jr. and Manager Maes

Ditch the big leagues, support local talent! Albuquerque's Yoruba Moreu Sr. and his standout son, Yoruba Moreu Jr., an impressive featherweight boxer, have teamed up with long-time New Mexican manager, Jacob Maes.

Yoruba Moreu Jr., one of New Mexico's most successful recent amateurs, prepares for his pro career at just 20 years old. Previously, Maes managed the careers of Elco Garcia, Archie Ray Marquez, and the Philippines' Ranee Ganoy when she was based in Albuquerque. Interestingly, Maes recently got back in the game, signing Albuquerque lightweight Andres Rey (5-0) earlier this year, returning to the boxing scene after a five-year hiatus running his Placitas utility, construction, and water systems business.

Maes gave a enthusiastic interview, expressing his excitement about working with Moreu Jr.: "I'm honored and blessed. I think he's got the best potential since Danny Romero." Romero is a power-punching North Valley native who won world titles at 112 and 115 pounds.

The Moreus initially opted for a New Jersey management group, but things didn't quite fit, leading them to Maes. According to Moreu Sr., the relationship went beyond business: "We've known Jacob for a while... he was interested in my daughter [boxer Sharahya] and my son." Yoruba Jr. himself felt comfortable with the veteran manager: "I don't want to deal with any out-of-state managers anymore."

Andres Rey, another Southpaw Albuquerque product, is flourishing under Maes' guidance, espcially since joining Force. He'll be competing in El Paso on July 14, on the same card as Abraham Perez.

Young Moreu Jr., yet another of New Mexico's Southpaw warriors (Holly Holm, Austin Trout, Fidel Maldonado Jr., Elija Martinez, etc.), has been boxing for almost a decade. He nabbed a silver medal at the 2024 USA Boxing National Open at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Family and Maes believe his style is more suited for the pros than the amateurs.

Details about the contract were not disclosed, but Moreu Sr. mentioned that his son will be able to focus solely on training for his pro debut. Maes doesn't have any immediate plans for Moreu Jr., but he hopes to get him in the ring as soon as possible.

El Paso's Stephanie Han (10-0, 3 KOs), the WBA lightweight champion, has joined Jake Paul's Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), the company headlining Albuquerque's Holly Holm's (33-2-3, 9 KOs) comeback fight against Yolanda Vega (10-0, 1 KO) in Anaheim, California. Holm is returning to boxing after a 12-year break focusing on MMA.

Han is trained by Las Cruces' Louie Burke, who also trained her family members, both retired. In a recent announcement, MVP hinted at a possible title defense for Han against Brazil's Beatriz Ferreira (7-0, 2 KOs), the IBF lightweight champion. But Han's potential victory against Vega could open up an opportunity for Holm.

Did you know? Holly Holm was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2022, joining her two toughest opponents, Frances' Anne Sophie Mathis and Detroit's Mary Jo Sanders. Holm went 1-1 against Mathis, losing shockingly by knockout in their first bout but winning by unanimous decision in the second, while both fights took place at Route 66 Casino Hotel. She went 1-0-1 against Sanders, the daughter of former Detroit Lions tight end Charlie Sanders, winning by unanimous decision at Isleta Resort & Casino and fighting to a draw at the Palace at Auburn Hills on Sanders' home turf. Mathis, arguably the most powerful puncher in women's boxing history, last fought in 2016, ending her career with a record of 27-4-1, 23 KOs. Sanders (25-1-1, 9 KOs) never fought again after the draw against Holm in October 2008.

Stephanie Han, the WBA lightweight champion, has switched her management to Jake Paul's Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), a company that will also manage Holly Holm for her comeback fight in boxing after a 12-year break concentrating on MMA. Han's potential victory against Yolanda Vega could create an opportunity for Holm, who is trained by New Mexico's Louie Burke. Meanwhile, in the realm of boxing careers, Yoruba Moreu Jr., a promising featherweight boxer from Albuquerque, has joined Jacob Maes' management, the same manager who guided the careers of Ranee Ganoy, Elco Garcia, Archie Ray Marquez, and Andres Rey – another Southpaw Albuquerque product who is doing well under Maes' guidance.
