Boxing Organization Globally Announces Gender Verification for Olympic Winner Khelif
Article:
The International Boxing Association (IBA) has instituted mandatory gender testing for all participants, a move prompted by the ongoing gender debate and the contentious case of Olympic champion Imane Khelif. In compliance with this new policy, Khelif, who was at the center of a gender controversy at the 2024 Paris Games, has been barred from participating in the Eindhoven Box Cup set for June 5-10.
The IBA's statement, released in May, highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety of all participants and creating equal competition conditions for both men and women as the rationale behind the decision. As a prerequisite for participation in any event run by World Boxing, athletes aged 18 and over will be required to undergo a PCR genetic test to confirm their birth gender and eligibility.
The examination can be performed via nasal or oral swab, saliva, or blood samples. The new rules, which have been developed to protect athletes in combat sports, have sparked controversy due to concerns over privacy, potential discrimination, and the impact on athletes who may not fit traditional gender categories.
In 2023, the IBA excluded boxers Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting from Taiwan from the World Championships, citing the results of uncited gender tests. This move stirred controversy and was later deemed a "random decision without proper procedure" by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC allows athletes to compete based on their self-determined gender identity and opposes any targeted testing for sex or gender identity.
Upon recovering its standing as an IOC partner in February, World Boxing is now establishing more stringent rules. The IOC has expressed its intent to keep boxing in the Olympic program, provided it partners with a reliable organization. In light of these developments, the future of boxing in the Olympics remains uncertain and is a topic of ongoing discussion.
