Boxing event organized by the Lord Mayor is delayed following the demise of renowned boxer Ricky Hatton

The Lord Mayor's Fire Fight Night, an anticipated boxing gala organised by the boxing-loving Lord Mayor, has been postponed due to the tragic passing of former world welterweight champion, Ricky Hatton.

Ricky Hatton, a much-loved figure across the nation and a true legend of British boxing, was found dead at his home in Manchester on Sunday, aged 46. His fighting spirit, humility, and dedication will continue to inspire generations.

The boxing gala was set to feature white-collar boxing involving firefighters from London and New York, and was to honour Ricky Hatton with the Freedom of the City of London in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to sport and the communities he inspired. However, due to his untimely demise, the Freedom of the City of London will now be awarded to Tyson Fury on the planned date of the boxing gala.

Ricky Hatton had expressed his joy in July about receiving the Freedom of the City of London, and considered London a special place, particularly fond of the Wembley conference center where he won the WBU light welterweight world title.

The Lord Mayor of London, Alastair King DL, expressed deep sadness over Ricky Hatton's passing. The City of London extends heartfelt condolences to Ricky Hatton's family, friends, and admirers. Further details about the rescheduling of the Lord Mayor's Fire Fight Night will be communicated later.

The Lord Mayor's Appeal thanks all supporters of the Fire Fight Night for their understanding and patience during this difficult time. It is hoped that the boxing gala can be rescheduled for a later date to honour the memory of Ricky Hatton.

Rest in peace, Ricky Hatton. Your legacy will live on in the hearts of boxing fans and the communities you inspired.
