Boxer Conor Benn reconsiders match against Ryan Garcia following unexpected defeat to Rolly Romero
Tale of the Ring: Conor Benn Turns Away from a Dance with Ryan Garcia
In a surprising twist, Conor Benn, the British boxer, has decided to keep his gloves off when it comes to Ryan Garcia. Garcia was expected to face off with Rolly Romero in a highly anticipated fight in NYC. Benn was there to get a glimpse of a potential future opponent.
With a possible rematch with Chris Eubank Jr. on the horizon, Benn expressed an interest in stepping into the ring with Garcia, if the Eubank Jr. match fell through. But all of that changed when 'King Ry' suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Romero.
Garcia was knocked down by a decisive double left hook in the second round, and his performance in the fight was less than impressive. Benn, who had initially shown interest in squaring off against Garcia, was left thoroughly underwhelmed.
"I didn't find it great," Benn said to iFL TV about Garcia's performance. "Very disappointing performance. It was dreadful."
When asked if he still wanted to fight Garcia, Benn responded curtly, "No. I don't think so."
The cross-Atlantic duel between Benn and Garcia isn't the only fight Garcia lost out on with his loss to Romero. He also missed out on a rematch with bitter rival Devin Haney.
The two fists had engaged in a heated bout last April, with Garcia dropping Haney three times. However, the result was overturned to a no contest after it was discovered that Garcia had failed two drug tests for the banned substance Ostarine. As a result, Garcia was suspended by the New York State Athletic Commission for a year and was cleared to fight again last month. An agreement for a second fight with Haney had reportedly been reached for the end of 2025, but fate had other plans for both men.
Haney outpointed Jose Ramirez, but Garcia's defeat put a damper on his side of the deal. It seems that Conor Benn won't be the one to pick up the pieces of Garcia's shattered dreams just yet.
