Box Office Showdown: War 2 squares off against Coolie on Independence Day
In the world of Indian cinema, two highly anticipated films are set to make their theatrical debuts on August 14 - Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie, starring the legendary Rajinikanth, and the action thriller War 2, headlined by Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR.
Coolie, which marks Rajinikanth's 169th film, is expected to be released on 5,000 screens in approximately 100 countries. This grand release coincides with Rajinikanth's golden jubilee in cinema, marking the 47th anniversary of his debut film Apoorva Raagangal.
Trade analyst Sumit Kadel predicts that Coolie will earn around Rs 80-90 crore in India and Rs155-165 crore globally, potentially delivering the "biggest ever for a Tamil film" in terms of box office earnings. Kadel's predictions seem to be coming true, as advance bookings for Coolie have crossed Rs 50 crore, and Day 1 collections are estimated to be around Rs 100-150 crore globally.
The film has already broken records, becoming the first Tamil film to cross USD 2 million in US advance booking. In the domestic market, Coolie has already sold over 1,421,430 advance tickets and has crossed the Rs 30-crore mark in advance ticket sales.
On the other hand, War 2, produced by Yash Raj Films, is expected to sell 626,475 advance tickets for day 1. The film will hit a staggering 5,000 screens across India for its Hindi version alone. However, specific box office predictions for War 2 are not available at this time.
Hrithik Roshan has made a special request to his fans to protect the spoilers of War 2 at any cost, indicating a strong anticipation for the film. War 2 is reported to have a budget of around Rs 400 crore, making it one of the most expensive Indian films.
In India, Coolie will be released on about 1,980 screens, including about 1,000 screens in Tamil Nadu alone. The Ayan Mukerji directorial, War 2, will also have a significant presence, with approximately 1,480 screens for its Hindi version.
In summary, Coolie has set high benchmarks in the early box office race, with predictions of strong worldwide earnings and a potential first-week collection of Rs 350-400 crore.
