Bowler Bumrah intends to participate in three Test matches among the five set against England in India's upcoming cricket series.
LET'S TALK ABOUT BUMRAH'S PLANS FOR ENGLAND SERIES
Jasprit Bumrah, India's star fast bowler, has decided to manage his workload carefully for the upcoming five-Test series against England. Rather than playing in all five matches, Bumrah aims to feature in merely three.
The 31-year-old has an outstanding career, boasting 205 Test wickets at an average under 20 each. Known for his unique action and ability to generate fierce pace off a short run, Bumrah has proven to be a formidable opponent for batsmen worldwide. However, a back injury sustained during India's series against Australia in January has compelled Bumrah to adopt a cautious approach.
With five tests scheduled in less than seven weeks, beginning at Headingley on Friday, Bumrah felt it essential to maintain his fitness, especially as India targets their first series win in England since 2007.
Expressing his optimism, Bumrah told Sky Sports, "The body is feeling good, no issues, no complaints." He acknowledged the need for prudence, asserting that he aims to extend his career across all formats by taking care of his body. The senior bowler added, "I plan on the go but three Test matches is what I am looking at, what I can manage at this moment."
The decision to limit his participation was not made lightly. Bumrah explained that he discussed his workloads going forward with medical professionals, eventually concluding that a more prudent approach was necessary. This conclusion led him to step aside from the captaincy role, a move he says was not met with controversy.
While Bumrah captained India during two tests in Australia, the team is now under the leadership of Shubman Gill, following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli last month. Bumrah emphasized, "I have to be a little more smart so I called the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and said I don't want to be looked at in a leadership role." When asked about any headlines suggesting he was removed from the captaincy, he reassured, "There are no fancy stories, no controversy, no headlines that I was sacked."
While Bumrah's initial plan is to play in three tests, the decision remains flexible, with the possibility of playing more matches as his health permits. The focus for Bumrah during the series will be on balancing his role within the team with the need to protect his back and maintain his effectiveness throughout the series.
