Let's dive into the ongoing conundrum surrounding Rafael Devers and the Boston Red Sox.

The front office is starting to get their hands dirty in this ongoing saga. After signing Alex Bregman, another lifelong third baseman (and a pretty swell one at that), the Red Sox find themselves caught between a rock and a hard place.

Devers, a three-time All-Star, has stringed three All-Star years with the Red Sox, playing third base exclusively. While the team's roster has gone through a major shakeup (most notably trading Mookie Betts), Devers was the one star they opted to keep in 2023, shelling out a massive 11-year, $313.5 million deal to keep him as their primary third baseman.

But with Bregman on the team, the plan seemed to be shifting Devers to second base. However, our buddy Devers has only been taking DH duties this season, with Bregman locking down third. The emergence of rookie Kristian Campbell at second has left Devers without a position in the field.

To add fuel to the fire, first baseman Triston Casas went down with a season-ending knee injury, leaving the Red Sox in a bit of a pickle. With no other options in sight, they floated the idea of Devers playing first base. But lemme tell ya, Devers wasn't too keen on the idea.

The powers that be – John Henry (the owner), Craig Breslow (the General Manager), and Sam Kennedy (the Team President) – all hopped on a plane to Kansas City, where the team was playing, to have a little sit-down with Devers.

Manager Alex Cora had a private tete-a-tete with Devers the previous day, but sources close to the situation have noted that Devers' attitude about the positions hasn't exactly been a crowd-pleaser in the clubhouse.

Devers went public with his discontent, citing conversations earlier this year regarding his glove. "I'm a ballplayer, but they can't expect me to play every single position out there," he said via a translator. The team reportedly told him to put away his glove and focus on the DH role."

"So right now, I just feel like it's not an appropriate decision by them to ask me to play another position," he added, then zooming in on Breslow (the former pitcher-turned-executive). "I'm not certain what [issue] he has with me," Devers told reporters. "He played ball, and I would like to think that he knows that changing positions like that isn't easy."

As of now, Devers is batting just .253, marking his lowest average since 2018 (he struck out 139 times in 2024, leading the league in that category). But hey, there's still time to turn things around!
