Boston Celtics Extend Contract with Coach Joe Mazzulla

The Boston Celtics have announced a multi-year contract extension for head coach Joe Mazzulla, effective as of August 8, 2025. The financial terms and length of the deal have not been publicly disclosed.

Mazzulla, who took over as interim coach in 2022 following the ousting of Ime Udoka, has proven to be a valuable asset to the Celtics. In his three seasons at the helm, he has led the team to an impressive 182-64 record, including a championship win in 2024 – making him the youngest coach to lift the O'Brien Trophy in over 50 years.

Under Mazzulla's leadership, the Celtics have won at least 57 games each season, with over 60 wins in the last two seasons. His impact on the team has been significant, ushering in a new era of success for Boston, combining strong regular-season performance with deep playoff runs.

However, the coming 2025–26 season presents challenges, notably Jayson Tatum’s recovery from a torn Achilles suffered in the playoffs, creating uncertainty about the team's immediate championship prospects.

Regarding roster impact, while no direct roster moves were announced alongside the extension, media discussions highlight concerns about potential roster changes or rebuilds under Mazzulla’s tenure. The coach’s long-term contract gives stability in managing the team’s roster continuity and future planning.

Notable additions to the Boston Celtics over the summer include Chris Boucher, Luka Garza, Anfernee Simons, and first-round pick Hugo Gonzalez.

Mazzulla's .740 win percentage in his first three seasons as head coach is the highest in NBA history with a minimum of three seasons at the helm. This extension reflects the Celtics' desire to maintain continuity in coaching to sustain their championship window despite roster uncertainties.

In a team statement, Mazzulla expressed gratitude, mentioning his faith, wife, children, ownership groups, president of basketball operations Brad Stevens, mentorship, staff, and players.
