Philipp Türmer Slams Chancellor Merz Over Border Rejections: "Absolutely Unacceptable!"

Boss of Juso, Türmer, call for Federal Chancellor's intervention over border rejection

After the Berlin Administrative Court's verdict on border rejections, Juso-Chairman Philipp Türmer has lashed out at Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU). According to Türmer, Merz needs to pressure Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) to alter his stance on border rejections, as per statements made to the Funke media group.

Türmer asserted that Dobrindt is obliged to abide by the law and adhere to the court ruling. He declared, "The Berlin Administrative Court's ruling makes it crystal clear that border rejections are illegal, just as we've consistently argued." He referred to Dobrindt's persistence in implementing border rejections as "completely unacceptable," advocating for a lawful directive to federal police officials, rather than encouraging them to break the law.

If Dobrindt fails to reconsider, Türmer implored Merz to intervene. "Merz must take immediate action," Türmer said. "There's no legal foundation for border rejections. It's more crucial to swiftly get the minister back on track instead of endorsing Dobrindt's actions."

The Berlin Administrative Court recently sided with three Somalis in a case concerning their rejection without a Dublin procedure. The court found the rejections to be unlawful.

Context: The court's decision, underpinned by asylum laws and EU immigration policies, supersedes the new conservative government's policy aiming to forestall the asylum process and turn away migrants at the borders. Despite this verdict, the German government has continued its more stringent immigration policy, with over 2,800 people denied entry in the first fortnight. The border checks have been intensified, resulting in a substantial hike in border rejections, with 739 people being turned back in a single week. This flout of the court's decision has led to demands for federal intervention, possibly focusing on ensuring compliance with the ruling and criticizing the government's immigration policies. The continued emphasis on border control and deportations, with an increase of 28% in deportations and a decrease in asylum seekers in Bavaria, adds fuel to the discourse.

In light of the Berlin Administrative Court's ruling against border rejections, Juso-Chairman Philipp Türmer called on Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz to intervene, emphasizing the lack of legal foundation for border rejections. He insists that Merz should advocate for a lawful directive to federal police officials instead of endorsing actions that encourage illegal border rejections, as per policy-and-legislation, general-news, and politics. The court's verdict, grounded in asylum laws and EU immigration policies, has overshadowed the German government's immigration policies, which have continued to prioritize border control and deportations, sparking criticism and demands for federal intervention.
