Bosbach rejects accusations, cancels scheduled public appearances
In the midst of the local election campaign, CDU Member of Parliament Caroline Bosbach has spoken out for the first time since allegations concerning her election to the Mittelstands- und Wirtschaftsunion (MIT) board in 2023 became public.
The controversy revolves around accusations that Bosbach promised payments of around EUR 90 to EUR 100 for entry into the MIT and offered free catering to secure the election of the leadership team, including herself.
Following these allegations, the CDU Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis issued an ultimatum on August 5, 2025, requiring Bosbach to answer open questions regarding alleged cash payments to secure her position. The deadline was set for August 8.
However, instead of a public board meeting scheduled to evaluate her responses, the CDU Kreisvorstand postponed the session to hold a private, confidential discussion with Bosbach. The location and time of this meeting have not been made public.
In response to the allegations, Bosbach has emphatically denied any wrongdoing. She has emphasized that all allegations are false and that she did not enrich herself or cause any financial damage to the CDU Rhein-Berg.
Bosbach has also requested patience and trust in the independent investigation by the Cologne public prosecutor's office, which is currently examining the case. She has offered to answer any questions from the public prosecutor's office personally.
Furthermore, Bosbach has stated that she voluntarily transferred 2,500 euros to the CDU and denied the existence of a fake invoice, as claimed by a former trainee who was later dismissed. She has also rejected the "fabricated and manipulated" allegations regarding the acceptance of 2,500 euros in the election campaign and her election as MIT district chair.
Bosbach has expressed concern that these allegations are part of a campaign aimed at damaging her credibility. In a video on Instagram and Facebook, she repeated earlier statements from her lawyers, emphasizing that the clarification lies with the public prosecutor's office.
The local election campaign is ongoing, and Bosbach has asked for the fabricated allegations not to be the subject of conversations. She has promised to fight for their common success after the clarification of all allegations.
This situation remains under active review by the CDU party structures and the Cologne prosecutors as of early August 2025. Further updates are pending regarding the results of the internal CDU meetings and any formal statements or legal actions from the public prosecutor.
