Borussia Dortmund recovers unexpectedly in Lille, securing a spot in the last eight. - Borussia Dortmund Recovers from Lille's Shock, Advances into the Quarter-Finals
Hailed by captain Emre Can, Borussia Dortmund emerged victorious against OSC Lille, clinching a place in the Champions League quarterfinals with a 2-1 (0-1) victory. The team, coached by Niko Kovac, now prepares to lock horns with powerhouse FC Barcelona, eagerly anticipating thrilling encounters reminiscent of a football carnival.
In the tense Stade Pierre Mauroy, thousands of fans erupted in jubilation as Dortmund turned the tables, with goals from Can (penalty, 54th minute) and Maximilian Beier (65th) orchestrating the comeback in a rollercoaster game teeming with opportunities.
Vindicated, sporting director Sebastian Kehl shared, "We're beyond relieved. We simply had to advance, but we also showcased a terrific performance." Despite the subdued celebration, goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, who was culpable for the early goal, expressed, "This was a fantastic win for us."
Lille Strikes First: Early Advantage for Home Side
Dortmund weathered the initial storm after conceding an early goal to Jonathan David (5th). Despite the setback, BVB persisted, repeatedly crafting chances. In contrast to their recent Bundesliga outings, Dortmund demonstrated resilience and creativity.
Kovac opted to overhaul his starting lineup after a dismal 0-1 defeat to FC Augsburg, introducing Waldemar Anton, Maximilian Beier, Marcel Sabitzer, and Julian Ryerson to the team. Notably, Jamie Gittens and Ramy Bensebaini, criticized by Kovac for poor performance and Ramadan fasting, remained on the bench.
Lille Scores Early
The match started disastrously for Dortmund. After a sloppy giveaway on the right flank, Ismaily played into the heart of the area where David had ample space. The 25-year-old's shot lacked precision but found its way past Gregor Kobel via a deflection from Nico Schlotterbeck, symbolizing Dortmund's season's misfortunes.
Despite the early hiccup, Dortmund refrained from imploding. The visitors pressed on and created several golden chances in rapid succession. Lucas Chevalier and defender Alexsandro combined to thwart Pascal Groß's effort. In a bizarre sequence, neither Julian Brandt nor Serhou Guirassy could convert from close range on Guirassy's 29th birthday.
Dortmund Unlucky
Dortmund controlled the flow of play, but Lille remained a threat. Captain Benjamin André squandered a chance to double the lead with a header. Just before halftime, a header from Groß struck the crossbar - Dortmund just missed their luck.
The second half saw Dortmund continuing their relentless assault. Their efforts were rewarded when Guirassy stumbled in a duel with Thomas Meunier, earning a penalty. Captain Can converted confidently.
The game opened up as soon as the scores were leveled. Both teams mounted attacks, with Dortmund's Kobel thwarting Lille's Hákon Haraldsson, who scored in the first leg, and Karim Adeyemi nearly striking the crossbar.
Beier Scores Stunning Goal
Beier ignited the away fans with a stunning strike moments later. Receiving a pass from Guirassy, the 22-year-old surged forward and struck a fermo shot into the top corner from around 14 meters.
With the lead, Dortmund retreated, allowing Lille to press but never posing a serious threat. Dortmund comfortably saw out the victory.
The quarterfinal first leg against Barcelona, coached by Hansi Flick, takes place in Barcelona on April 8 or 9. The return leg in Dortmund is set for April 15 or 16.
