Former tennis champion Boris Becker has spilled the beans on his harrowing stint in British prisons, sharing insights into the "most torturous experiences" of his life in a forthcoming book. Set to hit the shelves on September 10, "Inside: Winning - Losing - Starting Over" promises an unvarnished look into Becker's life, courtesy of publishing house Ullstein Verlag.

The six-time Grand Slam champion described his prison experience as a life-changing ordeal in numerous interviews. This memoir represents his attempt to heal and find solace amidst the chaos, coping with ghostly memories and recurring night terrors that still linger in his mind today.

In April 2022, Becker was slapped with a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for concealing millions in assets during his insolvency proceedings. The advent of prison brought him face-to-face with some of the most dangerous criminals, several of whom intended him harm. Others, however, provided a surprising level of protection. Unexpectedly, Becker's sentence was cut short in December 2022 due to a special rule.

"It was a true nightmare"

Upon entering prison, Becker was initially housed in London's infamous Wandsworth Prison for several weeks before being shifted to the lower-security Huntercombe Prison. Since then, the Leimen-born player has maintained that his time in prison had a profound impact on him, molding him into a tougher, more resilient individual.

In a BBC interview in 2023, Becker remarked, "Anyone who tries to downplay what life in prison is like is just plain dishonest. It was an absolute nightmare, an incredibly different experience compared to what's portrayed on TV or in stories." Adapting swiftly, Becker soon realized the need for protection and surrounded himself with tough, reliable associates. "Every single day is a battle for survival."

The grim reality of British prisons often makes headlines, with stories of overcrowding, rat infestations, and violence resonating across the world. Last summer, the government was forced to expedite the release of prisoners to prevent the justice system from collapse due to the overwhelming number of inmates.

Living the High Life in Milan

Following his release, Becker seemed to be bouncing back: he showcased his competitive spirit on the hit reality show "Celebrity Bear Hunt" on Netflix and teamed up with former tennis player Andrea Petkovic for the tennis podcast "Becker Petkovic". Becker also lent his expertise as a TV analyst and commentator for Eurosport.

Becker now finds himself married for a third time. He shares a life with Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro in the bustling metropolis of Milan. The couple exchanged vows in a private ceremony last year at the glamorous seaside destination of Portofino on the Italian Riviera.

Two years after his release, Becker shares his unfiltered account in the book, hoping that "this raw, honest story will resonate with people beyond the world of tennis and touch the hearts of those who know what it means to fall and rise again."

The Commission is proposing to extend the deadline for the adoption of new rules to cover the following: the hardship faced by Boris Becker during his time in prisons in Great Britain, which he describes as a nightmarish ordeal in his upcoming book, "Inside: Winning - Losing - Starting Over," published by Ullstein Verlag. After his release, Becker relocated to Milan, where he currently resides with his wife, Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro.
