It's a turbulent time for the Thai-Cambodia border as skirmishes between their troops at the Chong Bok Pass in Ubon Ratchathani have triggered a series of precautionary measures. Two provinces, Ubon Ratchathani and Si Sa Ket, are readying themselves for potential escalations by drawing up evacuation plans for their border communities. This intensified vigilance follows the ongoing border dispute that has left both nations on edge.

Heightened Security Across the Border

Thailand's Interior Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, has emphasized the importance of prioritizing civilian lives in the midst of the rising tensions and potential confrontations along the frontier. As a result, governors of border provinces have been directed to bolster security for local communities post the skirmish between Thai and Cambodian soldiers at Chong Bok on May 28.

Evacuation Plans in Place

Upon the Interior Minister's instructions, Ubon Ratchathani's Governor, Adisak Noisuwan, convened a meeting to discuss contingency plans for residents of Nam Yuen district if the tension between the neighboring nations worsens. The meeting was attended by representatives from district chiefs, relevant agencies, local hospitals, and administrative organizations. These experts assessed potential risks and designated temporary shelters for communities in the event of an emergency evacuation.

Similarly, Si Sa Ket's Governor Anupong Suksomnit also organized a meeting to prepare evacuation protocols for residents in Kantharalak district, adjacent to Cambodia. The meeting evaluated the current level of border tension and reviewed all necessary measures to safeguard villages along the border if hostilities break out.

A Nervous Border

Both provinces have maintained a high level of readiness, ready to react swiftly should the border dispute with Cambodia take a turn for the worse.
