Cambodia Confirms Death of Soldier in Border Clash with Thailand

In a regrettable turn of events, the Ministry of National Defence of Cambodia confirmed the loss of one of its soldiers in a recent border skirmish with Thai forces. The incident took place in the Techo Morakot village, Morakot commune, Choam Ksan district, Preah Vihear province.

According to the formal statement, the confrontation ensued when Cambodian soldiers alleged Thai troops initiated an unprovoked offensive against a position held by the Cambodian forces for an extended period. The Ministry denominated this event as an unjustified escalation, stating, "This clash is not something Cambodia desires."

Cambodian authorities affirmed their dedication to peaceful and diplomatic border resolution. They underscored the importance of maintaining peace, stability, and cooperation along the Cambodia-Thai border while reaffirming their determination to protect their territorial integrity "at all costs."

The deceased soldier's body has been transported from the border area for funeral rites. To prevent further misinformation and insecurity, the ministry sternly discouraged the dissemination of unverified or false reports on social media and other platforms. The public was encouraged to refer exclusively to official statements from the Ministry of National Defence.

Prior to the 6 am clash on May 28, 2023, the Cambodian army spokesperson reported that Cambodian troops were conducting a routine patrol when Thai forces opened fire without warning. Contrasting accounts, however, were presented by the Thai military, who claimed that Cambodian soldiers breached a disputed zone, prompting a Thai response. Though no Thai casualties were reported, the skirmish persisted for approximately 10 minutes until local commanders negotiated a ceasefire.

This incident took place in the forested border area of Chong Bok, Ubon Ratchathani province, Thailand, an uncharted zone with inconsistent territorial claims by both nations. Disputes in this region have a long history, with notable contention surrounding the Preah Vihear temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.

While the immediate cause of the clash remains under debate, underlying tensions were on the rise. Thai soldiers had previously accused their Cambodian counterparts of burning a Thai-built friendship gazebo in the Chong Bok area, indicative of recurring contentious incidents.

Tensions remain high between the two neighbors. Top military officials have met to ease tensions and work towards a peaceful resolution. A Joint Boundary Committee meeting is scheduled within two weeks to address the border conflict comprehensively.
