Border Skirmish Leaves Two Israelis Dead in Jordan
In a shocking incident, a conflict at the Jordan-Israel border resulted in the death of two Israeli soldiers. The border crossing, which accounts for around seven percent of all aid for the Gaza Strip, has been closed on both sides following the attack.
According to reports, the suspected attacker was a Jordanian national who had been working as a driver of aid convoys for three months. The identity of the perpetrator in the 2025 attack is not yet clear, but a similar incident at the Allenby Bridge in 2024 was carried out by Jordanian citizen Maher al-Jazi.
The Jordanian authorities have condemned the incident as a 'violation of the law' and a threat to the interests of the kingdom. An investigation into the incident has been launched, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Amman.
Israel's President Izchak Herzog expressed condolences to the families of the victims, while the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has accused Hamas of being responsible for the attack, stating that it is 'the result of the echo of Hamas' disinformation campaign.' The military wing of Hamas, however, has praised the attack.
The Kassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, have emphasized their solidarity with Israel's neighbouring country, Jordan. The border crossing between Jordan and the West Bank may remain closed for an extended period due to the incident.
Jordan, too, has condemned the attack and launched an investigation. The Jordanian authorities have temporarily suspended passenger traffic at the border, and humanitarian aid continues to reach the Gaza Strip via other routes.
The two soldiers killed were 20 and 68 years old. This is not the first time such an incident has occurred; last year, a Jordanian carried out an attack at the border crossing, killing three Israeli employees. The Israeli army has advised temporarily halting humanitarian deliveries to the Gaza Strip via land from Jordan.
There is 'repugnant incitement' in Jordan, according to Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Jordanian authorities have stated that they are committed to maintaining peace and security in the region. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
