Border skirmish leaves two Israelis dead in Jordan
In a shocking turn of events, a Jordanian civilian, reportedly a driver of aid convoys, carried out a deadly attack on an Israeli-controlled border crossing between Jordan and the occupied West Bank. The incident, which has been strongly condemned by Jordan, resulted in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers.
According to reports, the attacker opened fire on people at the border crossing, but his weapon malfunctioned, causing him to stab two men instead. The Israeli army stated that security forces neutralized the suspected attacker.
The military wing of Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic resistance movement, has claimed responsibility for the attack and expressed solidarity with the attacker. They marked an Israeli tank with a burning image and a red triangle, a symbol Hamas uses to mark enemy targets, in a Telegram message.
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the attack as "the result of the echoing of Hamas' lies campaign" and "disgusting incitement" in Jordan. However, Jordan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the incident as a "violation of the law" and a threat to the kingdom's interests.
It is worth noting that around seven percent of all aid deliveries for the Gaza Strip have come through the border crossing between Jordan and the West Bank since the beginning of the Gaza war. In response to the incident, Jordan has temporarily suspended personal traffic at the border crossing.
Jordan, which has a large Palestinian population, with an estimated 30 to 40 percent of all Jordanians having Palestinian roots, signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994. Investigations have been launched into the incident, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Amman.
This is not the first time a Jordanian has carried out an attack on the border crossing. Last year, a Jordanian attacker killed three Israeli employees. A truck driver who entered from Jordan opened fire on Israeli security forces, according to Israeli army reports. Security forces killed the Jordanian citizen.
The suspected shooter in the recent attack was a civilian who worked as a driver of aid convoys for three months. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the complexities and tensions that persist in the region.
