Border disputes intensify as Cambodians demolish Thai border barrier in Sa Kaeo region
In the Khok Sung district of Sa Kaeo, Thailand, a tense border dispute between Thai and Cambodian forces escalated on Thursday evening. The incident at Ban Nong Ya Kaeo saw Cambodian soldiers conscripting several villagers, including disabled individuals, to cross into the Cambodia-Thailand border area.
The situation was brought under control at around 10.40pm, when Col Chainarong Kasee, commander of the 12th Task Force of the Burapha Force, arrived to take charge. He joined negotiations with Cambodian officials, assisted by an interpreter.
During the negotiations, it was revealed that Cambodian forces had been using the conscripted villagers as a human shield to push the Thailand-Cambodia border. The conscripted villagers dismantled sections of the barbed-wire fence erected by Thai forces to prevent illegal crossings. Some of the villagers were seen taking rolls of wire back to their homes, allegedly for resale or personal use.
However, Col Chainarong Kasee stated that the dismantled barbed wire was installed on Thailand's original boundary line and did not encroach into Cambodian territory. This assertion was not contested by the Cambodian officials.
The negotiations led to a peaceful withdrawal of Cambodian troops and the conscripted villagers. The Cambodian forces relented in the border dispute, unable to provide evidence of Thai encroachment.
The incident highlighted the ongoing tensions and mistrust between Thailand and Cambodia along their shared border. The Thai authorities are closely monitoring the use of villagers as a tool of pressure by Cambodian forces.
The Thailand-Cambodia border dispute continues to be a concern, with the potential for further escalation and impact on bilateral relations. Despite this, the situation at the Ban Nong Ya Kaeo border area eased without violence or clashes.
It is essential to maintain peace and diplomacy in resolving border disputes, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all parties involved. The peaceful resolution at Ban Nong Ya Kaeo serves as a testament to the importance of dialogue and negotiation in managing international conflicts.
