Poland has announced an extension of its temporary border controls with Germany until October 4th, as irregular migration continues to be a concern for the European Union (EU) member states. The decision was made by Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński, following a shift in migration routes due to increased security measures and barriers on Poland’s eastern border with Belarus and Russia.

According to Kierwiński, the 98-percent density of the border has forced Belarusian and Russian services, as well as irregular migrants, to move to other sections of the EU border. Poland aims to close off migration routes toward Lithuania and Latvia, working in tandem with its EU partners.

The extension of border controls on the German and Lithuanian borders was decided on Friday. This move aligns with Germany’s similar measures at their mutual borders, aimed at managing undocumented migration.

In the specified period, entry into Poland was denied to 105 individuals. Meanwhile, Poland sent back six migrants to Germany, while taking in 72 people rejected by Germany, with two other cases resulting in denied entry.

The border controls, initially introduced last year, are being maintained as a temporary measure under Schengen rules, which allow such controls in emergencies or as a last resort for security threats.

Elsewhere, an accident occurred on a federal road in Reutlingen District, resulting in six injuries. Emergency services were called to the scene, and a helicopter was used for transportation to a hospital.

In other news, Darja Varfolomeev, a rhythmic gymnast from TSV Schmiden, won all five possible titles at the German Championships. Her impressive performance indicates promising form for the upcoming World Championships.

Lastly, over one million people attended the World Youth Day in Rome, including Pope Leo, the first American on the chair of Peter. The large number of pilgrims may present a significant test for the Pope during his tenure.
