Tightened Border Controls: Federal Police in Saxony Turn Up the Heat

Saxony's Federal Police intensifies border checks - Border control expansions carried out by the federal police in Saxony.

The Federal Police in Pirna, Saxony are beefing up border controls with its neighbors, Czech Republic and Poland. According to a spokesperson, additional personnel are being drafted in, although numbers remain under wraps. This directive comes straight from the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

Newly-appointed Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), sanctioned these stricter measures. The goal here is to stop asylum seekers who've already lodged applications in other EU countries from making their way in. However, those in vulnerable categories such as children, pregnant women, and others from at-risk groups, will not be initially affected[1][2].

Currently, the controls are being managed with existing manpower. However, if the current personnel prove insufficient, reinforcements will be called upon. The aim is to keep traffic flowing as smoothly as possible at the border crossings[1][2].

Border checks have been in place on auto routes 17 and 4 in Saxony since October 2023. Now, checkpoints have popped up along the border at additional locations, according to reports.
