Denied entry at North Rhine-Westphalia border - Border Compliance in NRW: Absolutely No Denials Granted

Ramping Up Border Controls: NRW Border Remains Permissive So Far

Here's the deal: The Feds cracked down on the borders of North Rhine-Westphalia and, after 24 hours, no one got the boot! A spokesperson for the Feds said no one made an asylum claim during that period, so there were no rejections or pushes-back.

Originally, the new Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), announced stricter checks. These checks would potentially reject asylum seekers who've already applied in other EU countries, but not pregnant women, kids, or other vulnerable folk.

Given the minister's announcement, the Feds beefed up their forces in North Rhine-Westphalia. However, they've chosen to keep their cards close to their chest about the number of officers mobilized. Typically, the Feds can draw on a mobile control and surveillance unit with 180 officers and reserve police if needed.

North Rhine-Westphalia's Interior Minister, Herbert Reul (CDU), thinks these fortified border controls send a double message: "They tell new arrivals it's not an open door anymore, but they also inform neighboring states they'll need to secure their borders in the future." Reul believes cooperation is essential to tackle Europe's migration conundrum.

When asked about the effectiveness of intensified border controls, Reul stated, "A year ago, I'd have been critical, but not anymore. Unregulated migration seeps into society, impacting public sentiment—we must acknowledge this, or distrust blossoms." Reul added that border controls are just one piece of the migration puzzle, admitting that they alone can't tackle this complex issue.

  • The Federal Police, or Feds, have ramped up border controls in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), aiming to strengthen the Westphalia border, yet no rejections have occurred during their initial 24-hour checks.
  • Alexander Dobrindt, the Interior Minister (CSU), announced stricter checks to potentially reject asylum seekers who've already applied in other EU countries, except for vulnerable groups like pregnant women, kids, or other affected individuals.
  • In response to Dobrindt's announcement, the Feds have beefed up their forces in North Rhine-Westphalia, but they remain discreet about the number of officers mobilized, mentioning the availability of a mobile control and surveillance unit comprising 180 officers and reserve police if needed.
  • Herbert Reul, the NRW Interior Minister (CDU), sees these fortified border controls as sending a dual message: "They signal a closed door to new arrivals, but also urge neighboring states to secure their borders in the future," suggesting cooperation is crucial to tackle Europe's migration enigma.
