Border Assault Results in Fatalities of Two Israelis in Jordan
In a shocking turn of events, a Jordanian civilian, who was reportedly working as a driver of aid convoys for the past three months, opened fire at a border crossing between Jordan and the Israeli-controlled West Bank. The attack resulted in the tragic deaths of two Israeli soldiers.
The suspected attacker, identified by the Israeli military, reportedly arrived in a truck carrying humanitarian aid meant for Gaza from Jordan. Upon reaching the border crossing, he is said to have opened fire, causing the fatal incident.
Following the attack, the military wing of the Islamist terror organization Hamas praised the act and expressed solidarity with Jordan. A post on Telegram showed a burning Israeli tank and a red triangle, which Hamas uses to mark enemy targets. However, Hamas' involvement in the incident has not been confirmed.
The Jordanian authorities have condemned the incident as a "violation of the law" and a threat to the interests of the kingdom. Jordanian President Abdullah II has temporarily suspended passenger traffic at the border crossing, and investigations have been launched by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry in Amman.
Israel's Foreign Ministry has stated that the attack was "the result of the echo of Hamas' disinformation campaign." In response, the Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir advised the political leadership to temporarily halt humanitarian deliveries to the Gaza Strip via the land route from Jordan. The aid via this route should be suspended "until the investigation of the incident is completed and improved control procedures for Jordanian drivers are implemented."
The incident could affect aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip as the border crossing may remain closed for an extended period. However, it's worth noting that aid continues to reach the region via other routes.
The attack comes a year after another incident at the same border crossing, which resulted in the death of three Israeli employees. This tragic event has once again raised concerns about security along the Jordan-Israel border.
Jordan, with a significant Palestinian population, has a peace treaty with Israel, signed in 1994. The incident has sparked condolences from Israeli President Izchak Herzog, who expressed his sympathies to the families of the victims.
As the investigations continue, the international community watches closely, hoping for a swift resolution and a return to peace and security along the Jordan-Israel border.
