Bordeaux’s historic Golden Apple pub gets a craft beer revival under new owners

The Golden Apple, the oldest English pub in Bordeaux, has changed hands after 35 years. A Franco-British couple, James Anderson and Céline, have taken over the well-known Chartrons district venue. They also plan to use it as a showcase for their own craft beers brewed nearby in Lacanau.

The pub first opened its doors in 1989 and quickly became a local landmark. James Anderson, a long-time customer since 1991, now returns as the new owner alongside his wife, Céline, who leads the brewing at their Lacanau-based brewery, La Canaulaise.

The pub will now serve as a key outlet for La Canaulaise’s beers, including their flagship IPA and stout. With changing drinking habits in France, the couple aims to build on The Golden Apple’s long-standing reputation while introducing their own locally brewed options. No other Australian brewers have been identified as operating successfully in the French market.
