Bordeaux to Witness the Economic Launch of Philippe Dessertine in 2026
In the upcoming 2026 municipal elections in Bordeaux, a significant number of candidates have announced their intentions to run for the mayoral position. The race is heating up, with a variety of contenders representing different political ideologies.
Following the sudden death of Nicolas Florian, the successor of former Republican mayor Alain Juppé, at the age of 55 due to a stroke in January, the political landscape of Bordeaux has seen a shift. One of the key contenders for the leadership of the 'central bloc' for the March vote is Philippe Dessertine, an economist who teaches in Paris and resides on the banks of the Garonne.
Philippe Dessertine has positioned himself as a candidate on the center-right, distancing himself from political parties. Instead, he claims to represent civil society. He has been vocal about his views on Bordeaux, criticizing the city as less secure, dirtier, less attractive, and suffering from a 'slow but uncertain paralysis.' In response to these concerns, Dessertine has announced his candidacy for the mayor of Bordeaux in the 2026 municipal elections.
Joining Dessertine in the race are Deputy Renaissance Thomas Cazenave and former tourism minister Nathalie Delattre. Both Cazenave and Delattre share similar views with Dessertine about the state of Bordeaux. The three of them, along with Pierre De Gaetan Njikam, a municipal councilor running in the same political space, are vying for the leadership of the 'central bloc.'
On the other side of the political spectrum, Pierre Hurmic, the current green mayor of Bordeaux, is waiting to announce his candidacy for re-election. Hurmic is affiliated with the French Green Party (Europe Ecology – The Greens, EELV), and he is expected to seek re-election as mayor of Bordeaux in 2026.
Meanwhile, the French Left Party (LFI) is planning to designate a candidate by the end of October.
In the right-wing spectrum, Julie Rechagneux, an MEP, will lead the list for the National Rally in the Bordeaux municipal elections. Virginie Bonthoux Tournay, a candidate from Zemmour's Reconquest party, will compete with Rechagneux in the Bordeaux municipal elections.
As the 2026 municipal elections in Bordeaux approach, it remains to be seen which candidate will emerge victorious and lead the city into the future. The race promises to be a closely contested one, with each candidate presenting their unique vision for Bordeaux's development.
