Boosting Your Golf Swing Power for Greater Distances off the Tee: A Guide

Power Up Your Golf Swing in 2025:

Want to slash your handicap and improve your scores like never before? Step up your game with these expert tips to boost your power!

Amateur golfers craving extra yardage will notice a distinct correlation between distance and a lower handicap index, and the same goes for tee shots. It's a no-brainer that this is an important improvement area, but it's just as crucial for female golfers.

Don't be surprised if you peek at Golf Monthly's comprehensive guide to women's golf and find that power and distance could be the key to shooting your best scores yet. So, how do you get it? Here are my top tips and drills to help you get more power in your swing:

Drill 1: Rest, Rotate, Reach

Begin with the basics: perfect your golf grip, the right stance, and keep that straight left arm in your swing. When you've nailed those essentials, this drill will help you generate the feeling of power by making your shoulder turn the driving force behind your swing.

Set up in an athletic stance and rest the club gently on your shoulder furthest from the target. Rotate your shoulders back until your back is facing the target, then stretch your arms out so your lead arm is straight. Feel like you can't talk? Welcome to torque – the stored energy you'll unleash during your swing. This drill charges up your backswing like a wound-up rubber band, releasing its energy in the downswing for much more power.

Remember to keep it easy on the flexibility front – a short swing with decent torque is far more powerful than a long collapsed one.

Drill 2: Flower Power

Your brain's connection with your muscles is mind-blowing sometimes. Quick reminders can work wonders instead of complex instructions. I love this drill because it's quick, easy, and great for alignment as well.

To start, find a blade of grass or better yet a daisy, and place it an inch or so in front of your ball. Your mission? To hit the ball and collect the mini-target.

If you hit the ball low, the club will stay closer to the ground, and you may even chip a divot – just like hitting a flower with a scythe. That's a surefire sign you're hitting the ball on the up, leading to a scooped swing and squandered power.

Practice hitting half-swings like you're punching the ball out from under low tree branches. Master this smaller movement, and then build your way up to a full swing using the same formula. And when you're on the course? Use something on the ground in front of you as your guide – just don't forget to remember your flower power.
