Cathy Hummels' book project strikes a roadblock
Cathy Hummels and her sibling were working on a book about overcoming depression, but their collaboration with a publisher hit a snag. After revealing the book cover, things went awry due to disputes surrounding Hummels' brother's educational background. Hummels' lawyer, Stefan Ventroni, confirmed the publication and her brother, Sebastian Fischer, decided against continuing the project jointly. The Südwest-Verlag, on the other hand, claimed they terminated the contract due the lack of foundation for publication in the current circumstances.
Known for her openness about her own mental health struggles, Hummels planned to release a book titled "Finding Your Way Out of the Shadows" with her medical-professional sibling. However, the final cover advertised Fischer's doctoral title, which he had yet to earn.
Following the "Bild" newspaper's investigation, the publisher initially removed the cover featuring the planned book publication. In an early July statement, Südwest-Verlag noted they had no prior reason to doubt Fischer's unfinished dissertation. "After research and investigation into the matter, it was discovered that Fischer does not currently hold a doctoral title," the publisher explained.
Hummels herself frequently referred to her brother as "Doctor" on social media. In response, she issued a press statement through her lawyer to clarify the situation. "I've referred to my brother as 'Doctor' on social media since 2018, under the assumption that every doctor automatically receives the title," Hummels said. She hastened to add, "I never intended to deceive anyone but merely recognized his profession."
Despite the hurdles, Hummels and her brother are still eager to release a revised version of "Finding Your Way Out of the Shadows." In the meantime, Cathy continues to use her social media platforms to promote mental health awareness.
