In the heart of Santa Clara, the California Booksellers Convention was buzzing with excitement. Among the attendees were Annie Murray and Fletcher Hughes, co-owners of an Agatha Christie-themed bookstore named the Secret Staircase. The duo, known for their passion for mysteries, were there to network with fellow booksellers, publishers, and authors.

However, the convention took an unexpected turn during a presentation about new e-reader technologies. Andrew Fox, one of the presenters, suddenly collapsed while demonstrating an innovative virtual reality headset. The atmosphere grew tense as Annie immediately suspected foul play. With her degree in criminology and recent licensing as a private detective, she was eager to assist the police.

Fletcher, too, lent his support. Together, they formed a formidable team, their input highly valued in the investigation. They discovered that Andrew Fox had many enemies, including those he had wronged in business and those accused of stealing his technology.

The Secret Staircase is also the setting for Cynthia Chow's latest mystery novel, "A Body at the Book Fair". Cynthia, who is the branch manager of Kaneohe Public Library on the island of Oahu, has a passion for mysteries and, it seems, for motorcycle riding and regrettable tattoos.

If you're a fan of mysteries, you might want to enter a giveaway for a copy of "A Body at the Book Fair". To do so, you can either email KRL at [email protected] or comment on the article. Remember, if you win, please provide a mailing address. The giveaway is open to U.S. residents only, and entrants must be 18 or older.

In addition to the mystery novel, the Secret Staircase offers a mystery section, a mystery Facebook group, and a mystery podcast. The podcast features mystery short stories and first chapters read by actors, providing an immersive listening experience.

It's worth noting that KRL receives free copies of most books it reviews in exchange for an honest review. The convention also offers opportunities to explore new books and technologies, with presentations on the latest e-readers, some of which have virtual reality platforms.

As the investigation into Andrew Fox's death continues, Annie and Fletcher are determined to uncover the truth. The California Booksellers Convention may have started as a celebration of books, but it has certainly become a mystery to remember. A winner will be chosen on August 16, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates.
