Bombs defused in Kiel: over 7000 people evacuated

In the heart of Kiel, two World War II bombs were skillfully defused by the explosive ordnance disposal service last Sunday. Approximately 7,300 residents from the Neumühlen-Dietrichsdorf and Wellingdorf districts found themselves temporarily displaced as a precaution. Thankfully, their homes and lives remained undamaged thanks to the quick and efficient efforts of the bomb disposal team.

The first bomb, weighed at an impressive 500 kilos, was discovered during routine inspections. The second, a 250-kilo British bomb, was discovered nearby. Both bombs were safely neutralized without causing any unforeseen complications. Fortunately, the road closures and evacuations did not impede traffic on the B502.

Large-scale bomb defusals in urban areas are not common occurrences, but when they do happen, they require a meticulous and coordinated response. Specialist equipment, such as bomb disposal robots, is crucial for maintaining safe distances and performing precise tasks. Multi-agency collaboration, including law enforcement and emergency services, ensures comprehensive and efficient emergency responses.

In this instance, members of the public were kept safe through the use of surveillance drones and the implementation of the Incident Command System (ICS). The ICS protocol provides a structured approach to command and control, ensuring that all aspects of the response are managed effectively.

Once the ordnance was successfully neutralized, the affected roads were reopened, and the evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes. The successful defusal of these bombs is a testament to the expertise and dedication of the explosive ordnance disposal services and the well-planned emergency response procedures in place.
