Heavy Russian Attacks on Kyiv Cause Devastating Loss and Damage

The city of Kyiv, Ukraine, experienced a significant and devastating strike overnight on July 30-31, 2025, marking one of the heaviest assaults on the city in recent weeks. This attack involved a massive barrage of drones and missiles, resulting in at least 15 deaths, including children, and over 130 injured[1][2][3].

The Russian forces launched more than 300 drones and 8 missiles, with at least five missiles and 21 drones hitting targets in Kyiv, overcoming air defenses[2]. The attack impacted several residential areas, including Kyiv’s Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts, causing a nine-story residential building to partially collapse, trapping people under the rubble[1][2].

The number of children injured was the highest recorded since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began three years ago. Among the injured were young children, including a 5-month-old infant and a 6-year-old boy[1][2]. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported nine injured minors, the highest number of injured minors in one night in Kyiv since the start of the war[4].

Emergency services and first responders carried out search and rescue operations through the night and into the following day, attempting to locate and assist those trapped or injured[1][2].

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that today's attacks demonstrate Russia's response to Ukraine's wish for peace with America and Europe[5]. The surrounding areas and regions of Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Sumy, Mykolajiw were also attacked[6].

Notably, Ukraine has been defending itself against Russian invasion for over three years, and as part of its defensive campaign, Ukraine also regularly attacks targets in Russia[7]. However, there are no reports of any casualties or damage resulting from these attacks.

The air traffic authority Rosaviatsiya reported temporary restrictions at the airports in Volgograd and Saratov due to Ukrainian drone attacks[8]. Falling drone debris also caused delays of up to six hours on the railways in the Volgograd region[8].

In Russia, there were reports of a fire on an industrial site in the Penza region, but no further information about the enterprise involved or any resulting casualties or damage was provided[9].

This attack highlights a concerning escalation in both human casualties and damage to Kyiv's infrastructure, intensifying the humanitarian crisis in the city amid ongoing conflict[1][2][3]. The event has been reported as one of the worst in recent weeks regarding the death toll and particularly the number of children injured.
