In the heart of the Middle East, the international community is expressing growing alarm over the ongoing crisis in Gaza City. The city, home to roughly half a million people, has been the epicentre of heavy bombardment and a widening ground assault.

In an attempt to alleviate the situation, the Israeli military announced on Wednesday the opening of a temporary evacuation route along Salah al-Din Road, heading south. This new route is intended for people fleeing Israel's Gaza City amid the ongoing crisis.

The Israeli military did not specify whether this route is in addition to or a replacement for the humanitarian zone in the south that was previously ordered. Prior to the expanded offensive, the Israeli military had ordered people in Gaza City to go to a humanitarian zone in the south.

The crisis in Gaza City has forced more than 350,000 people to flee the northern city as of Tuesday evening, according to the Israeli military. These people are cramming onto the coastal road of the Gaza enclave, seeking safety and respite from the violence.

The new evacuation route will be open for 48 hours, starting at noon local time on Wednesday. It is worth noting that no independent humanitarian organization has effectively overseen or managed the evacuation, which the International Committee of the Red Cross called impossible to fully implement given the scale and risks.

The Israeli military's announcement of another evacuation route comes following international alarm over hundreds of thousands of Palestinians sheltering in Israel's Gaza City amid heavy bombardment and a widening ground assault. The international community continues to express concern over the situation in Gaza City, calling for a swift resolution to the crisis and the protection of civilians.

As the situation in Gaza City remains volatile, the international community and humanitarian organizations are urging for increased efforts to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the residents, particularly those who have been displaced by the ongoing conflict.
