Bomb Discovered by Experts in Berlin: Firebomb Identified

In the heart of Berlin, a series of unexpected events have unfolded, with the discovery of several World War II bombs requiring urgent defusals. Here's a rundown of the recent incidents and their aftermath.

Last Wednesday, construction workers in Spandau unearthed a 100-kilogram unexploded ordnance. The discovery led to the evacuation of around 12,400 people, making it one of the largest evacuations in the capital. The restricted area around the discovery site has since been established.

In a similar incident in December 2021, a 250-kilogram aerial bomb was found in Gesundbrunnen, necessitating the evacuation of around 15,000 people. The bomb has since been defused, and people have been allowed to return to their homes.

Another significant incident occurred in July 2023, when a 500-kilogram bomb was discovered in Marzahn, forcing another 15,000 residents to evacuate their homes. The bomb has since been removed from the Spree and will be disposed of properly.

The recent discovery in Spandau, scheduled for defusal later today, will also affect a significant number of people. The bomb, found during construction work at the Mühlendamm lock on the Fischerinsel, a popular tourist destination in the southern part of the Spree Island in Mitte, will necessitate the evacuation of around 12,400 people.

However, there's some good news. In Berlin-Mitte, the bomb discovered on Thursday has been deemed non-hazardous, and the restricted area has been lifted. Similarly, in Spandau, the evacuation has begun, but people can return to their homes, and the closure of several streets is no longer in effect. There may still be traffic disruptions, though.

During the evacuation in Spandau, a temporary shelter has been set up in a sports hall for those who cannot stay with relatives or friends. The Vivantes hospital group has also announced that the clinic will not be evacuated during the bomb defusal, but the emergency room cannot be accessed, and patients cannot receive visitors. Operations in the affected care facility are not restricted, but access is not possible.

Part of the Havel will also be closed during the bomb defusal in Spandau. Divers inspected the bomb in Berlin-Mitte early in the morning, and the incendiary bomb found in Spandau was classified as harmless during inspection.

Among the buildings in the restricted area in Spandau are a hospital, a care facility, a primary school, and two kindergartens. Despite these challenges, Berliners have shown resilience and cooperation, working together to ensure the safety of the city and its inhabitants.
