In 1989, Bollywood audiences were captivated by the romantic drama "Chandni", directed by the legendary Yash Chopra. The film starred three lead actors who would leave a lasting impact on Hindi cinema: Sridevi, Rishi Kapoor, and Vinod Khanna.
The film, made on a budget of Rs 8 crore, went on to earn an impressive Rs 27 crore at the box office, solidifying its status as a cult film in Hindi cinema.
Tragically, all three lead actors are no longer with us. Sridevi passed away on February 24, 2018, at a family wedding in Dubai. Her death was discovered in a hotel bathroom. Rishi Kapoor followed in 2020 during the COVID-19 period. His battle with leukemia took his life on August 21, 2025, at the age of 67. Vinod Khanna, who was also a part of the "Chandni" cast, died in 2017 during treatment for cancer.
Interestingly, Vinod Khanna was not the director's first choice for the film. Yash Chopra initially offered the role to Rekha, but she recommended Sridevi's name instead. The decision proved to be a successful one, as Sridevi's performance in "Chandni" is still remembered fondly by fans today.
The loss of these talented actors has left a void in Hindi cinema, but their work in "Chandni" and other films continues to inspire new generations of actors and filmmakers. The film remains a testament to their talent and the power of love stories to captivate audiences.
