Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan receives the National Award for Best Actor for his role in Jawan, choosing to share the recognition with co-star Vikrant Massey for their work in the 12th Fail.
The 71st National Film Awards, honouring the best films, performances, and cinematic achievements from Indian films certified by the CBFC between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023, were announced in a press conference at the National Media Centre, New Delhi.
Shah Rukh Khan's Historic Win
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan made history by winning his first National Film Award for Best Actor for his role in the action thriller "Jawan". This is not only his first National Award but also the first for the movie "Jawan", which has become the biggest hit in his career spanning over three decades, grossing over Rs 1100 crore.
Rani Mukerji's First National Award
Joining Shah Rukh Khan in the list of first-time winners is Rani Mukerji. The legal drama Mrs Chatterjee v/s Norway saw her win the Best Actress award, marking her first National Award.
Multiple Wins for "12th Fail" and "Sam Bahadur"
Vikrant Massey was awarded Best Actor for his performance in "12th Fail", a biographical drama which also won Best Feature Film. The film "Sam Bahadur" won three awards for Best Makeup, Best Costume Designer, and Best Feature Film in Promoting National, Social, and Environmental Values.
Other Notable Wins
Sudipto Sen was named the Best Director for "The Kerala Story". Urvashi and Janaki were awarded Best Supporting Actress for "Undercurrent" and "Vash", respectively. Vijayaraghavan and Mutthupettai Somu Bhaskar won Best Supporting Actor for "Pookkaalam" and "Parking".
The film "Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani" won Best Feature Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, while "Sam Bahadur" was recognized as the Best Film Promoting National, Social Values. Other notable awards include Best Telugu Film for "Bhagavanth Kesari", Best Tamil Film for "Parking", and Best Marathi Film for "Shyamchi Aai".
Special Recognition for "Animal"
Ranbir Kapoor's "Animal" took home three National Awards for Best Sound Design, Best Music Director (Background Score), and Special Mention for Re-recording.
"Chaleya" Triumphs
"Chaleya", a romantic track in the movie "Jawan" sung by Shilpa Rao and Arijit Singh, was a big winner. The song was written by Kumaar and composed by Anirudh Ravichander. Shilpa Rao won the National Award for Best Female Playback Singer for "Chaleya".

Ashutosh Gowariker served as the Chairperson of the jury for the Feature Films section of the 71st National Film Awards.
