Bolaños asserts that the renewal of the Constitutional Tribunal lacks immediacy in the current proposal
In a series of statements, Minister of the Presidency Felix Bolanos has highlighted several significant issues that Spain will face in the upcoming elections in 2023.
The elections next year will play a crucial role in determining Spain's future, according to Bolanos. He warned that a government composed of the right and the far right could lead to a halt in progress and regression, if elected.
Bolanos also announced that the renewal of the Constitutional Court will be completed on Monday, with four new magistrates taking possession of their positions. However, he criticized the PP for failing to comply with its constitutional mandate and blocking the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary.
Looking ahead, Bolanos described 2023 as a 'transcendental' year due to the celebration of municipal and regional elections in May and general elections in either November or December. He emphasized the importance of dialogue, understanding, and seeking what unites us, particularly in Catalonia.
However, Bolanos did not repeat his call for dialogue in Catalonia during his latest statements. He also did not reiterate his previous statement that the sovereignist process in Catalonia has ended.
In response to the mobilization called by the Council of the Republic, the Catalan National Assembly, and Omnium Cultural for January 19 in Barcelona, Bolanos called out PP's leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo for sowing fear with prophecies that will not come true. He also questioned whether Feijoo will continue to lead the PP in 2023.
Meanwhile, the arrival of four new judges to the Federal Constitutional Court, including Sigrid Emmenegger, a judge at the Federal Administrative Court nominated by the SPD, will bring about significant decisions. These decisions may include rulings on the election law reform, the constitutionality of the introduction of second vote caps, and the removal of the basic mandate clause, as well as potential new rulings on the classification and possible banning of parties like the AfD by constitutional review.
Bolanos also suggested that 2023 may be the year when 'those who rule the right close the window' when they realize that their current leader, Pablo Casado, 'doesn't cut it.' He further accused Feijoo of wanting 'things to go badly instead of helping with agreements.'
Finally, Bolanos stated that the decision to proceed with the law proposal is up to parliamentary groups, and he did not repeat his previous criticisms of the PP's actions regarding the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary.
