Nigeria Bids to Host the 2030 Commonwealth Games

In a significant move for Nigerian sports, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has put forward a bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The President's ambition goes beyond hosting a sporting event, as he sees it as an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy for young people and to strengthen national development through sports.

The bid was discussed during a meeting between President Tinubu and a delegation from the Commonwealth Sport Bid Evaluation Committee at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Femi Gbajabiamila, President Tinubu's Chief of Staff, welcomed the delegation, assuring them that Nigeria is not only capable of hosting the Games but eager to make history.

The proposed host cities for the 2030 Commonwealth Games are Abuja and Ahmedabad. Habu Gumel, President of Commonwealth Sport Nigeria, stated that Nigeria is prepared to deliver an environmentally sustainable edition of the Games. The element of inclusivity, which the Commonwealth symbolises, is what President Tinubu hopes will benefit Nigeria.

Darren Hall, Director of Games and Assurance at Commonwealth Sport, expressed his admiration for the passion of the Nigerian people in all their endeavours, including sports. He thanked the Nigerian government for the warm welcome. Hall also noted that the Games symbolise unity and diversity, and Tinubu insists that Africa deserves its turn after nearly a century without hosting the Games on African soil.

The decision to scrap the Ministry of Sports and replace it with the National Sports Commission is part of President Tinubu's efforts to reposition sports in Nigeria. This move, along with other bold steps taken by the administration, is aimed at making history by hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Nigeria and India are the official bidders for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. President Tinubu expressed confidence that Nigeria is ready to host the Games, with all infrastructure, security, and hospitality requirements to be met on schedule. The final decision for the host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games will be taken by the Commonwealth Games General Assembly in November 2025.

A statement regarding the matter was released by Tinubu's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The statement emphasised the administration's commitment to making the 2030 Commonwealth Games a memorable event that will leave a lasting legacy for the people of Nigeria and the continent as a whole.

The 2030 Commonwealth Games, if successful, would mark a significant milestone in the development of sports in Nigeria and the African continent as a whole. The bid is a testament to President Tinubu's vision for the future of sports in Nigeria and his commitment to leaving a lasting legacy for the youth of the nation.
