Boko Haram Terrorists Invade Military Base, Causing Nigerian Soldiers to Flee to Cameroon

In the early hours of a Monday in August 2025, Boko Haram insurgents stormed the CIO Battalion military base in Rann, Kala Balge district, Borno State, marking another violent incident in the ongoing conflict in the region.

The attack resulted in the death of at least two Nigerian soldiers and left several others injured. During the assault, the insurgents set armoured tanks on fire and stole an unspecified quantity of ammunition. In the aftermath, some soldiers fled their posts and crossed into neighboring Cameroon, taking their arms with them.

This attack came a few months after a similar assault in Malam-Fatori, Abadam LGA, where 22 soldiers, including a commander, lost their lives. The Nigerian military continues to battle Boko Haram insurgents, with soldiers citing inadequate weaponry as a significant challenge against Boko Haram's better-armed fighters.

The insurgency in the North-East region of Nigeria has been ongoing since 2009, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives and the displacement of millions, primarily in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states. Despite the Nigerian military's consistent claims that Boko Haram terrorists have been largely defeated, the group continues to pose a significant threat to the region's security.

Soldiers attached to the battalion, following the attack on the CIO Battalion in Rann, fled into Cameroon. Many of these soldiers were injured during the attack, and the source reported that gunmen set armoured tanks ablaze during the raid.

The Nigerian military faces criticism for the inadequate weaponry provided to soldiers, leaving them vulnerable against better-armed Boko Haram insurgents. This concern has been echoed by soldiers who claim that their superiors have left them exposed in the face of the ongoing conflict.

The insurgency in the North-East region of Nigeria remains a significant issue, with the lives of countless individuals hanging in the balance. The ongoing conflict underscores the need for increased support and resources for the Nigerian military to effectively combat Boko Haram and bring peace to the region.
