Body found in Russia’s Onon River after abandoned car discovered near thin ice

A body has been recovered from the Onon River in Russia’s Transbaikal Territory. The discovery follows reports of an abandoned car near a hole in the ice. Authorities are now investigating the incident.

The body of a man was found in the Onon River, close to Olovyanninsky District. It was located 2.5 kilometres from a local water intake facility. Nearby, an abandoned car containing personal belongings was also discovered.

Police confirmed that the victim’s body was later retrieved near the vehicle. The area has experienced wet snow, making roads slippery and increasing hazards. Traffic officers have urged drivers to take extra care in the conditions.

Residents have been warned about the dangers of walking on autumn ice. Thin or unstable ice poses serious risks, particularly after recent weather changes.

The investigation into the man’s death remains ongoing. Authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the abandoned car and the recovery of the body. Local warnings about ice safety and road conditions stay in place.
